Kölner Lernspielverlag: Lochkasten + Lemo with built-in self-checking

Kölner Lernspielverlag develops learning games that work without a screen and that children can play on their own. At their heart are two wooden base units with interchangeable card sets made from sturdy card. That way the same unit stays in use for years.

How the Lochkasten works

You slide a card set into the wooden box, and your child puts the wooden peg into the hole next to the right answer. If it is correct, the card can be pulled out; if not, it stays stuck. Even two-year-olds understand this built-in self-check. The Lochkasten base unit is available on its own without cards or as a starter set with 6 card sets for 2 to 3 years and from 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 years, plus sets for year 1 and year 2 at school.

How Lemo works

With the Lemo wooden frame, children link matching pictures using rubber bands that they stretch over the wooden pegs, which trains fine motor skills along the way. Card sets such as Schattenspiele, Verknüpfungen, Zusammenhänge, Knobelspass or Zählen bis 20 are labelled from 3, 4 or 5 years. The Lemo starter sets include the wooden frame and 3 to 6 card sets.

Choosing the right card set

Every card set is labelled by age or school year. For toddlers there are Tiere erkennen, Welt der Dinos or Wunderwelt Natur; at nursery age Was fehlt?, Schattenrätsel and the series with the mouse. For school there are first and last letters, first reading, addition and subtraction up to 100 and the times tables. Our guide toys by age explains which games make sense at which age.
