Wochenbett vorbereiten: Checkliste für die ersten Wochen

Preparing for the postnatal period: a checklist for the first weeks

The postpartum period – the first weeks after the birth – is a special, intense time. If you prepare a little in advance, you can enjoy it in a more relaxed way and concentrate fully on your baby and your own recovery. Here is a checklist of what really helps.

For your physical recovery

  • Comfortable, loose clothing that does not constrict
  • High-quality nursing pads and, when breastfeeding, a nourishing nipple cream
  • Gentle care products for the postpartum period – you will find a selection in our postpartum collection
  • Plenty to drink within reach – a bottle by the bed

For rest and wellbeing

  • A cosy retreat where you can nurse and rest
  • Pre-cooked meals in the freezer – worth gold in the first weeks
  • Small snacks for in between, especially when breastfeeding
  • Something to read or listen to for the quiet hours – a postpartum calendar that lovingly accompanies you day by day through this time is lovely too

Organisational matters to clarify in advance

  • Who will support you in the first weeks (partner, family, friends)?
  • Is midwife aftercare organised?
  • Are important purchases and administrative errands prepared? The newborn essentials and a packed nappy bag ideally belong here too

The most important point

Allow yourself to really treat the postpartum period as such. That means: resting, recovering, accepting help and lowering your expectations of yourself. The household can wait. This time will not come again, and your body needs it to heal.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the postpartum period last?

The postpartum period is usually considered to be the first six to eight weeks after the birth. The first ten days are the early postpartum phase, in which as much rest as possible in bed or on the sofa does you good.

What do I tell visitors who want to come?

Be honest and generous with yourself: short visits, ideally with something practical like a meal, and only when it feels right for you. A loving “not yet” is perfectly fine.

What is the best gift for a woman in the postpartum period?

Something for her rather than for the baby: a warm meal, a voucher for a lie-in, a little something from the For Mums selection – or a meaningful piece of jewellery like a bola she can keep wearing.

With us you will find gentle companions for this time in the postpartum collection as well as further essentials for mums in For Mums.
