Schnuller: Latex oder Silikon, welche Grösse wann?

Dummies: latex or silicone, which size when?

Dummies come in many varieties, and the first purchase quickly raises questions: latex or silicone? Which size fits? Here are the answers to help you find the right dummy for your baby.

Latex or silicone?

Both materials are widely used and have their own characteristics:

  • Silicone: tasteless and odourless, shape-stable, durable and easy to clean. It’s slightly firmer. Silicone is the most common choice.
  • Latex: a natural product, softer and more elastic, which is often comfortable for newborns. Latex is less shape-stable, wears out more quickly and should be replaced more often. It is not suitable if there is a known latex allergy.

Which material your baby prefers is individual – some will only accept one or the other. You may need to try a few out.

Which size when?

Dummies come in different sizes based on age. The divisions vary by manufacturer; a typical range is:

  • Size 1: approx. 0 to 6 months
  • Size 2: approx. from 6 months
  • Size 3: approx. from 18 months

Important: always use the right size for your baby’s age and check the manufacturer’s guidance. A dummy that’s too large won’t fit properly yet; one that’s too small can become unsuitable as your baby grows.

Safety and care

Check the dummy regularly for cracks or porous patches and replace it in good time, especially with latex. Clean new dummies before first use and then regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure the shield has air holes.

In our dummy collection you’ll find models in silicone and latex in various sizes, including from Frigg.
