Ab wann braucht mein Baby einen Beissring?

When does my baby need a teether?

When your baby starts to drool more, chew on everything and becomes unsettled, teething is often the reason. A teether can help. But from what age is it useful, and what should you look for? Here are the key answers.

When do babies start teething?

The first teeth come in most babies between the 4th and 7th month – some earlier, some significantly later. That’s completely normal. Even before the first tooth is visible, the gums can feel itchy and sore. That’s exactly when many babies start putting everything in their mouth.

When a teether helps

As soon as your baby can grasp and shows signs of teething – increased drooling, chewing on hands, red gums, unsettledness – a teether is useful. This is often from around 3 to 4 months. The counter-pressure from chewing can pleasantly relieve the irritated gums.

What to look for in a teether

  • Safe materials: BPA-free silicone, untreated wood or natural rubber – safe for the mouth and suitable for chewing on.
  • Easy to grip: light, with textures that small hands can hold easily.
  • Different surfaces: bumps and ridges feel different and provide gentle stimulation.
  • Easy to clean: since the teether is constantly in the mouth, it should be easy to clean thoroughly.
  • Size: large enough that nothing can be swallowed.

A tip

Some silicone teethers can be briefly cooled in the fridge (not the freezer) – the coolness is additionally soothing for the gums. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first to make sure this is suitable for that particular product.
