How many bodysuits does a newborn really need?
Teilen
Bodysuits are the basis of the baby wardrobe – they are worn under almost everything. But how many do you really need? Too few mean daily washing, too many end up unused in the cupboard because your baby grows out of them. Here is a realistic assessment.
The rule of thumb
For everyday life with a newborn, 6 to 8 bodysuits per size is a good guide. That way you can cope even when something goes wrong – and with newborns that happens several times a day. If you want to wash very frequently, 5 to 6 are enough. If you prefer to wash less often, plan for 8 to 10.
Why not more?
Restraint pays off especially in the smallest size (50). Newborns grow quickly – this size often fits for only a few weeks. Better a few bodysuits in 50 and a little more in 56 and 62. That way you avoid unworn pieces becoming too small. Which size roughly matches which age is shown in our size chart.
Short or long sleeves?
A mix gives you the most flexibility. Short-sleeved bodysuits work as a base layer all year round – in summer also on their own. Long-sleeved ones keep warm in winter under the romper. A split of roughly half and half is a good start, which you can adjust by season. If you prefer one-pieces, our Body, Overall + Romper collection offers alternatives too.
What to look for when buying
Bodysuits sit directly on the skin – which is why soft, skin-friendly materials such as GOTS-certified organic cotton are particularly important. What is behind the label is explained in our guide GOTS explained simply. Practical are models with envelope shoulders (so the bodysuit can be pulled downwards if needed) and with press studs at the crotch for quick nappy changes.
Frequently asked questions
How many bodysuits do I need in size 50?
Four to five are usually enough. Many babies wear size 50 only briefly – some even skip it. The bigger supply is worth it from size 56.
Wrap-over or pull-on bodysuit for newborns?
For the first weeks, wrap-over bodysuits with buttons are more practical: nothing has to be pulled over the delicate head. Pull-on bodysuits with a wide neckline come into play later, when dressing and undressing become more routine.
How often does a bodysuit need changing?
As soon as it is damp or soiled – with newborns that is often several times a day. That is why the small buffer of 6 to 8 pieces per size is so helpful.
In our bodysuit collection you will find short- and long-sleeved bodysuits made from soft, natural materials. They are part of our newborn collection for the first baby weeks – and a fixed item on our newborn essentials checklist.
