Why children's eyes need sun protection

The lens of a child's eye is clearer than an adult's and lets through more UV radiation – which is why proper sunglasses are worthwhile, especially when playing outdoors. The DARLA by LIEWOOD offers 100% UV400 protection of category 3 and looks the way children like to wear.

Which size for which age?

The DARLA comes in two sizes: for toddlers from 1 to 3 years (12.5 cm long, 12 cm wide) and as DARLA Junior for 4- to 10-year-olds (13 cm long, 14 cm wide). If in doubt, measure your child's head width – glasses that pinch will not be worn. Both sizes come in several colours, matte, glossy or transparent.

What do UV400 and category 3 mean?

UV400 means radiation up to 400 nanometres is blocked – that is UV-A and UV-B completely. The category, by contrast, only describes the tint: category 3 is the dark level for bright summer days, the beach and the mountains. The two are independent; dark glasses without a UV filter would even be harmful.

From what age does a child need sunglasses?

Babies belong in the shade, under a sun sail or a hat – glasses rarely stay on a nose at that age. From around one year they become practical, and that is exactly where the smaller DARLA size starts.

Are polarised lenses really necessary?

They are not needed for protection – the UV filter takes care of that. They are pleasant wherever light reflects: on water, in sand and in snow. If you spend a lot of time at the lake, you notice the difference.

What if the glasses keep being taken off?

Usually it is the fit: if they press behind the ears or slide down the nose, they come off. Better to measure the size again than to persuade the child – and put them on only briefly at first so they become a habit.
